New to overlanding or backcountry? Have questions about our "Summary of Routes"? This page is for you!
Key Words
These are words that you will see mentioned throughout this site and the associated route descriptions. The below is the meaning we prescribe to these words:
Summary of Route - explained
You will find a "Summary of Route" on all routes detailed by Untrammelled Travels. The following is provided for added clarity on what is intended by these categories.
Type
Backcountry/Overland - the "Type" categorization provides a brief description on the route (out and back / round trip), and what you can expect from the final destination.
Rating
Backcountry/Overland - the "Rating" categorization provides our personal opinion on the quality of the route. We take into account the difficulty to reward ratio, views, lack of high use, final destination quality and enjoyment of the route itself.
Season
Backcountry/Overland - the "Season" categorization provides our recommended time of year to complete the route. While our routes can be completed at any time of year with the appropriate skill set, we strongly recommend you follow this category for the most enjoyable experience.
Length/
Duration
Backcountry/Overland - the "Length" and "Duration" categorizations are estimates. Length is approximate and derived from GAIA maps. Duration is solely our recommendation based upon route length and additional activities found in the area. We will always specify if the length is cumulative or one way.
Vehicle Suitability
Overland - the "Vehicle Suitability" categorization is our recommendation. We have seen Honda Civic's and Audi Q7's in areas that we consider 4x4 only. It is ultimately up to you to determine if your vehicle is suitable for the terrain.
Difficulty
Backcountry - the "Difficulty" categorization is based upon our impression of the hiking route taking into account duration, elevation, route finding and any other unique route factors. Your experience and fitness level may result in a substantially different difficulty rating.
